Our 4 Main Areas Of Interest:

Environmental Justice and Sustainable Development
Environmental issues have always been of central importance to the Greens and to the Heinrich Boell Foundation. This does not mean to just “save frogs”, but to deal with issues of global warming, energy production and energy consumption as well as air quality and water. Despite the attention these issues have gained the process of changing old patterns and of putting existing technologies to work for the benefit of present and future generations is still much to slow. At the same time existing environmental problems often affect the already disadvantaged parts of the population disproportionately. The foundation supports a variety of Israeli environmental organizations, which over the years attempted successfully to have a growing impact of politics and society.

Women’s Rights and Gender Democracy
Gender democracy is one of the main fields of work for the foundation, where it has been playing a pioneering role in many respects. The aim is to strengthen the social, legal and political position of women and to improve their opportunities to participate in political decision making. In Israel the foundation supports Jewish as well as Arab-Palestinian women’s groups that are working for these goals in their respective societal contexts. These organizations are dealing with capacity building, economic empowerment, advancing women’s representation in decision-making processes and the assessment of gender issues in budgetary policies. Furthermore the foundation sees gender democracy as a cross cutting issue that needs to be reflected in the overall work and in each of the projects the foundation supports.

Strengthening Civil Society and Democratic Participation
On the background of German history and it’s own participation in the post war history of West and East Germany and then unified Germany after 1990 the Greens and the Heinrich B?ll Foundation see democratic participation as a basic ingredient for a vivid, stable and developing democracy. It aims to strengthen the development of civil society as a motor for democratic transformation to expand participation in political decision-making. An essential part of this is the effort to secure and implement the rights of minorities in society. The foundation supports projects in Israel that help to implement the rights of foreign workers as well as low paid workers. It supports organizations that work for the improvement of the status of the Arab-Palestinian minority in Israel as well as efforts to promote fair compromises concerning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Dialogue and Networking Programs – Strengthening German-Israeli and EU-Israeli Relations
On the background of German-Jewish and German-Israeli relations as well as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the Heinrich B?ll Foundation supports a wide range of activities in the field of political education. These include conferences on various historical and actual issues, public meetings of writers as well as exploring new ways of education in learning about and commemorate the prosecution and murder of the European Jews. It supports efforts to make the discourses in the respective countries understandable in other countries and to strengthen a pluralistic and critical discourse.
